Will a Regular Mattress Fit in an RV?

Your next adventure starts with a better night’s sleep.

Perfect fit. Built-to-order. Made for every mile.

Can You Put a Regular Mattress in an RV?

While there are some instances where a regular mattress can fit in an RV, most RVs will require an RV-specific mattress.

This is because they typically have a limited or unique sleeping space that requires a unique mattress size or even shape, such as rounded or angled corners.

Regular Mattress Sizes vs RV Mattress Sizes

Unlike standard residential mattresses, RV beds come in varying (and often “odd” or “unique”) dimensions.

They typically measure in around 60″ x 75″ or 72″ x 80″.

While some RVs can accommodate traditional mattress sizes, many require tailored dimensions for a snug fit.

Easy Shorthand

  • Bunk and Three-Quarter sizes are very unique and found most frequently in RVs
  • Short Queens are only 5” shorter than standard Queen mattresses
  • Short Kings are shorter and narrower than standard King mattresses
  • Twins, Fulls, and California King RV sizes are identical to at-home options

Other Potential Hurdles

Height Limitations

RVs often have restricted vertical space, particularly in bunk areas or pop-up campers.

With this in mind, it can be best to opt for a mattress with a depth of 4″ to 6″ to avoid heads bumping against ceilings or obstructed window views.

Length and Width Restrictions

Slide-out compartments and limited surface area may mean that shorter or skinnier mattresses are a must.

Options like RV Short Queens will ensure a perfect fit and a good night’s sleep.

Unique Shapes

Sometimes, even with the overall right measurements, standard mattresses still won’t always fit unique RV designs

Due to space limitations, you’ll often find cut outs, angled corners, or rounded corners, in an RV mattress — something you can’t find in a big box mattress store.

Weight Considerations

Minding your rig’s gross weight is something every RVer knows! RV mattresses are made to be lightweight, saving you from worry about strained vehicle capacity.

Residential mattresses, meanwhile, can often be very heavy.

Can you put a regular mattress in an RV?

While you can put a regular residential mattress inside an RV, there will likely be issues getting a perfect fit.

RV mattresses are made thinner to better suit the limited vertical space, as well as in “RV mattress sizes”.

For example, you’ll often find an RV Short Queen, which is 5” shorter than a standard Queen.

While there are some instances where a regular mattress can fit in an RV, most RVs will require an RV-specific mattress.

This is because they typically have a limited or unique sleeping space that requires a unique mattress size or even shape, such as rounded or angled corners.

While you don’t need a special mattress for your RV, a typical everyday residential mattress will be a bit different from one found in your rig.

RV mattresses are often made in unique sizes and shapes, as well as in shorter heights, to better fit the limited space inside RVs.

Unlike standard residential mattresses, RV beds come in varying dimensions — typically around 60″ x 75″ or 72″ x 80″ — and unique shapes, like rounded or angled corners.

A regular Queen can sometimes fit, depending on your RV.

However, you’re more likely to find an “RV Short Queen” mattress, a size specially made to fit inside the limited space of an RV.
